Preparing For A Move If You Are Getting Married

If you are about to get married and your spouse and yourself are soon about to move to a new home together, the process of preparing for moving day is sure to be one that has you a bit anxious. With two households full of belongings, it can be a bit difficult to determine what gets to move and what gets left behind. Here are a few tips to help you with the process so you are ready for residential movers to haul your items from each of your homes without incident.

Make A List To Determine Who Has What

Before you start packing up your personal effects to be placed on a moving truck, you need to know if your spouse-to-be has duplicate items. There is no need for two washing machines or bread makers unless you wish to keep one in storage in case one happens to break. If you are aware of the appliances your significant other has in their possession and compare it to what you have yourself, you can make a decision on whose gets to stay and whose gets to go. This process needs to be done with your partner, taking into consideration the age of each item so you have an idea of how long it will last.

Sell, Giveaway, Or Donate Unneeded Items

Make sure you and your partner start the process of eliminating unneeded items well in advance of moving day, or you will end up having to place everything you hold in possession upon a moving truck. Host a yard sale at each of your homes and donate items to schools, churches, and other businesses in your area that may be able to use them. Ask friends and family members if they have a need for any of the items you do not wish to bring to your new home, as well.

Package Items With Labels Indicating Contents

When you pack up your items for a move, be sure to appropriately label boxes or bins so you are aware of the contents inside. You can also label the room the items are to go in, or write your name on the box so you know which items are yours and which are your soon-to-be spouse's. Another idea is to color-code boxes according to the owner or room. This will make it easier for you to decorate your new home, as your moving service will know where to place packages upon their arrival at the structure.
